Free Revit version checker

Drop in an RVT or RFA file to see which Revit version saved it, whether it's workshared, and when it was last saved. You don't need Revit installed, and the file stays on your computer.

Your file is read in this browser tab. It's never uploaded.

Why check the version first.

Revit only opens files saved by the same release or an older one, and opening an older file in a newer Revit upgrades it for good once you save. Checking first tells you which release a consultant's model needs, and stops an accidental upgrade that leaves the rest of the team unable to open it.

The checker also shows whether a model is workshared and where its central model lives, which matters before you detach it, archive it or send it outside the firm.

Common questions.

Drop the RVT or RFA file on this page. Every Revit file records the release that last saved it, and the checker reads that record without opening the model. In Revit itself you'd have to start opening the file and wait for the upgrade prompt to find out.

No. Revit opens files saved by the same release or an older one, and saving in a newer release upgrades the file for good. A file saved in Revit 2027 can't be opened in Revit 2026. Keep a copy before you upgrade a model someone else still works on in the older release.

A workshared model is set up so several people can work on it at once, each with a local copy that syncs to a central model. The checker shows whether the file is a central model, a local copy, or not workshared, and where the central model lives.

No. The checker runs in your browser and reads only the file's header, where Revit keeps its version and save details. The model never leaves your computer, so it's safe to check a live project file.

AutoMEP works on Revit 2024, Revit 2026 and Revit 2027 models. A Revit 2025 model can be worked on after a one-time upgrade to Revit 2026, and AutoMEP asks before it does that. Models saved in Revit 2023 or earlier need to be saved from a supported release first.

Yes. Revit families (RFA) and templates record their release the same way projects do, so the checker reads them too.

Edit the model without opening Revit.

Upload the RVT to AutoMEP and describe the change in plain English, the way you'd mark up a print. AutoMEP edits the model and sends it back for you to review.
